Après un premier album éponyme en 2020 très remarqué en Angleterre et qui a bénéficié d’une version remixée il y a deux ans (« Re-Wired ») avec des guests comme Jeff Scott Soto, Phil X et Joel Hoekstra, COLLETERAL apporte beaucoup de fraîcheur au Rock anglais. Très américain dans l’approche et dans le son, le combo réunit avec une touche très moderne tous les ingrédients à même de réunir les fans de Rock au sens très large du terme. Avec son côté très ’stadium’, il devrait rassembler les fans d’une époque estampillée FM comme ceux de l’actuel Alternative Rock.

« Should’ve Known Better »
(Big Shot Records)
A en croire la presse spécialisée d’outre-Manche, ce nouvel album de COLLATERAL retranscrit parfaitement toute l’énergie déployée en live par le groupe. On est donc en droit d’attendre un disque costaud et déterminé. Et il faut reconnaître que la formation du Kent est séduisante à bien des égards. Dans un Alternative Rock à la Nickelback et un Hard Rock soft façon Def Leppard ou Bon Jovi, les mélodies sont mises à l’honneur, ce qui n’empêchent nullement son guitariste, très en verve, et son frontman notamment d’apporter un souffle très véloce à un « Should’ve Known Better », séduisant et accessible.
Et si la rythmique basse/batterie (Jack Bentley-Smith et Ben Atkinson) n’est bien sûr pas en reste, COLLATERAL doit beaucoup à son chanteur, Angelo Tristan, au timbre très personnel et à la puissance vocale remarquable. Mais le frontman n’est pas le seul garant de l’identité musical du quatuor. Son guitariste, Louis Malagodi, imprime littéralement de son jeu les compositions de ce « Should’ve Know Better » très varié et entraînant. Et enfin, le relief de ce deuxième opus prend toute sa dimension grâce à la production de Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Kris Barras, Bury Tomorrow). Un travail d’orfèvre.
Visiblement, les nombreuses tournées des deux dernières années ont fait beaucoup de bien à COLLATERAL, dont les nouveaux morceaux sont très fédérateurs. Les Britanniques imposent leur marque sur des refrains entêtants et une redoutable efficacité dans le songwriting. On peut déjà imaginer l’impact sur scène de chansons comme « Glass Sky », « Original Criminal », Teenage Dream », « No Place For Love » et « Final Stand ». Parfois un peu convenu et attendu sur certains passages, « Should’ve Known Better » s’adresse à un vaste public sans se perdre dans le côté émotionnel du genre.
